Every few weeks, a client or a prospect asks us the same question in a different wrapper: can we just use AI for this graphic instead of paying a designer?
It’s a fair question. The tools are cheap, they’re fast, and the samples look great. So we tried them, across a range of real client work, and here’s what actually happened:
An AI graphic can trap your brand before you know it
We had a small startup client that had a graphic built early on, before they had multiple product lines. As they grew, they needed that graphic updated and adapted for their other products. Sounds simple, right?
It wasn’t.
The original graphic, the one their entire brand was built on, had been created by AI. It was pretty. It was also flat, and we couldn’t change it. We ended up scrapping it and building an entirely new graphic family from scratch. Honestly, we lost time at the start trying to salvage what was there before we accepted we had to start over the old fashioned way.
AI is good at ideas, not finished brand work
I get asked about AI graphic design tools all the time, by clients, by prospects, by students, by anyone who’s tried one of the dozens of tools out there. There’s a lot of pressure right now to lean into AI for everything, and I understand why. People want speed, and they want to save money.
I want to be honest about what we’re actually seeing, because it’s not what people expect.
We’ve tried a lot of different AI tools for graphic design work, and here’s where we’ve landed: AI is genuinely helpful for generating ideas quickly. If you need a starting point or a few directions to react to, it can save you time there. But when it comes to producing a finished, well branded graphic for a real company, it’s not ready to replace a trained graphic artist. Not yet.
More often than not, you’ll spend more than you budgeted trying to prompt your way to something usable, and it still won’t hold up.
AI is helpful for generating ideas quickly. It’s not yet ready to replace a trained graphic artist.
Where AI graphic design tools genuinely help
AI is going to keep improving, and I expect our own graphics work will use more of it over time. But right now, today, we still rely on a team of genuinely talented graphic artists to do this work, and we’re not going to pretend a tool can replace that just because it’s the trend.
AI graphic design tools are a great fit for:
- Teachers
- Small business owners
- Students
- Content creators explaining what they’re looking for
- Nonprofits with limited budgets
- Freelancers who need something quick for their own social media
- Early stage startups before they have a real brand built out
AI graphic design tools aren’t the right fit for:
- Big companies with an established brand
- Presentations that will go through a lot of rounds and revisions
- Companies with multiple product lines that need to stay visually consistent
- Franchises or multi-location businesses where every location has to look the same
- Anything customer facing that represents your brand to the public
Our honest take for business leaders
If you’re a business leader feeling pressure to replace your design team with AI, my advice is to test it on something real first. See if it holds up when your brand is actually on the line.
Why HMG still puts a designer on brand work
Because a pretty graphic that can’t grow with your business isn’t a shortcut, it’s a setback. HMG’s mission isn’t to hand you the fastest possible output. It’s to make sure what we build actually holds up as your brand grows, whether that means an AI-assisted first draft or a graphic family built by hand from day one.
If you’re unsure whether AI graphic design tools or a professional designer is the right call for your next project, we’re happy to take a look and give you a straight answer.
